What will the neutralizing antibody test tell me?

  • Is there evidence of a prior infection?

  • Is there evidence of hybrid immunity?

  • Is there evidence of an immune response that may protect against COVID-19 infection?

What are Neutralizing Antibodies?

Neutralizing antibodies are a specific type of antibody that is capable of keeping an infectious agent such as SARS-CoV-2 (COVID-19) from infecting cells by neutralizing or inhibiting its biologic effect.

Why are they important?

Neutralizing antibodies prevent the virus from spreading to healthy cells and eliminate the infection during the early stages.

In the United States, the vaccines (Pfizer, Moderna, J&J, and Novavax) are authorized for use to produce neutralizing antibodies against the SARS-CoV-2 spike protein.

If exposed to SARS-CoV-2, neutralizing antibodies from the vaccines or if previously infected, bind to the spike protein on the virus’ surface and neutralize the virus, preventing it from infecting the cells.

Why should we keep track of neutralizing antibodies?

Comparison of numerical test results will help monitor your personalized waning immunity level against SARS-CoV-2 and may also assist in determining the timing and appropriateness of a vaccination booster.
